Stan Corey has over 38 years in the financial services industry as a Certified Financial Planner™ (CFP®) professional, Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC), and Certified Private Wealth Adviser (CPWA). Although he retired in 2018 as a managing director of a national planning firm located in Great Falls, Virginia, Stan continues consulting in family law cases, elder care, and estate settlement processes. He also speaks to audiences in family law, financial services industry, and educational institutions.

Recognized for his expertise in financial planning, Stan has received numerous awards nationally, as well as locally. Since 2003, he has been selected as one of the nation’s Top 500 Wealth Managers by Bloomberg Wealth Manager magazine. In 2009, he was selected as Financial Planner of the Year by Boomer Market Advisor magazine. Most recently, he was named as one of the Top Financial Planners in Northern Virginia.

Stan has been a guest speaker at a number of industry conferences; is a featured writer on the site, “Sixty and Me,” and co-wrote and co-taught a required course for mediator certification (Economic Issues in Divorce) at Northern Virginia Mediation Services (NVMS) for 18 years. Sharing his wisdom via the written word, Stan released his first book, The Divorce Dance, in January 2016, and it became an Amazon best seller. The novel deals with the monetary, emotional, and legal issues of divorce as it follows a wife going through a divorce. She—and the book—educates readers about options, procedures, possible roadblocks, and more by her own divorce investigation. As a result of the book’s popularity, Stan has become well recognized locally as one of the top financial advisors in family law. Stan continues to promote mediation and collaborative divorce as an alternative to a litigated divorce. Many times, he is the financial advocate for the less well informed in divorce cases, providing understanding to complex financial issues and helping clients make difficult decisions that affect the rest of their lives.

Stan’s second book, When Work Becomes Optional, was released in July 2018 and is on pace to become another best seller. This nonfiction book provides valuable information for those nearing retirement, already in retirement, or caring for family members in retirement. A primer on Social Security and Medicare, the five stages of retirement, income distribution planning, elder law, income taxes, as well as dealing with the emotions of life’s changes throughout retirement. In addition, the book helps retirees make better decisions about their lives and maintain control over life and not leave difficult decisions to family members, friends, or strangers.

Stan was born in New York and grew up in Stony Brook, New York, on Long Island. Upon graduation from American International College in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1971, he served in the US Navy for four years. Service in the navy brought him to the Washington, DC, metropolitan area in 1972, and he has been there ever since. In 1974, he won the Naval District of Washington sailing championship at the US Naval Academy and was an ocean racing coach for the USNA after his honorable discharge.

Stan resides in Great Falls, Virginia, with his wife, Jayme, and enjoys spending time with his children and grandchildren, as well as traveling, playing golf, and fly fishing. Being a lover of the sea from an early age, he also relishes an occasional sail with friends.
